Local Motion
Overview of Organization
Local Motion was founded in 1999 with the goal to get people across the Winooski River, where the Burlington Bike Path then ended. We accomplished that goal, and later established the Island Line Bike Ferry, bringing over 20,000 passengers to the Champlain Islands every year.
Since that time, Local Motion has become Vermont’s statewide advocate for walking and biking. We help communities build their own local culture of biking and walking—providing classes for all ages, technical assistance on infrastructure, bike-friendly resources for businesses and communities, guidance and resources for advocacy and community organizing, and more.
Local Motion’s mission is to make it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont.
Our vision: More people will walk, bike, and roll in Vermont for recreation and transportation, improving their health while benefiting local communities and the environment. Local Motion is Vermont’s leading resource for all issues related to walking, biking, and rolling.
