Overview of Organization

Mission: The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center (CSSC) inspires people of ages to create three- dimensional art on the grounds of Vermont’s historic West Rutland marble quarries.

Founded in 1987 by Vermont artist B Amore, the CSSC is a non-profit organization (501c3) offering year- round programs of hands-on workshops for all ages, artist residencies and exhibitions. The campus is located in the heart of Vermont's historic marble industry in West Rutland. Contemporary art is presented in the onsite gallery, Sculpture Garden and along the new walking trail.

Through our educational programs, CSSC directly serves sculptors and students ranging in age from 5-80+, from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. CSSC strivens for artistic excellence by inviting educators and professional sculptors to demonstrate their craft and creativity through intensive workshops and funded residencies. Instructional courses include 2-5 day workshops in a variety of media as well as custom courses for high school and college students.
CSSC partners with Rutland County municipalities to create works of public art for the community. This year, the 15th Stone Bench Project for area teens will be held in June/July and installed in the Town of Mendon. Students are recruited through the schools and service agencies (Mentor Connector, Boys and Girls Clubs) to ensure program access to underserved populations.
Another example of collaboration includes the Rutland Sculpture Trail, a walking trail in downtown Rutland honoring individuals who have contributed to VT’s cultural heritage. Since 2017, figurative sculptors are commissioned to design and carve 12 marble monuments that are permanently installed in downtown Rutland to build public awareness and pride in our community.
