Position Overview

BOARD MEMBER JOB DESCRIPTION
General Responsibility:
Participate on the governing body of the United Way of Northwest Vermont (Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle Counties) to set policy, provide financial and legal oversight, participate in resource development and direct and monitor major organizational initiatives to achieve stated mission:
“To build stronger Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle Counties
by mobilizing our community to improve people’s lives.”

Qualifications:

  • Leadership position in the community, or requisite leadership skills.
  • Interest in community work and human services. Time, energy, and a commitment to serve.
  • Experience in voluntary health and welfare organizations helpful.

MAJOR DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Attend and participate in meetings of the Board of Directors (6 per year) plus the annual Board and Staff Retreat in June. Meetings are held in a hybrid format; remotely via Microsoft Teams from 5:30-7:30 p.m. or in person in our South Burlington Office unless otherwise noted.

2) Support the staff by becoming active in one or more of the following activities/committees/sub-committees:

  • Community Impact/Advocacy
    • Partner Funding Team
    • Data Insight Team
  • Finance
    • Investment
  • Governance
  • Donor Engagement

3) Participate in the annual Community Campaign by making a personal gift. Board members will also be asked to assist with Campaign solicitations within their professional fields.

4) Represent United Way as needed in the three-county region.

TERM OF OFFICE
A term on the Board of Directors is three years. Board members may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.

TIME REQUIREMENTS
Approximately 4 – 6 hours per month including Board Meetings and other Committee or volunteer assignments.
