Advocating for Vermont’s Common Good in Unprecedented Times, February 2026

Vermont nonprofits are forces for good, making our communities stronger. In the face of unprecedented challenges, we must work together to ensure that organizations showing up for us each day continue to do so. This means working collaboratively within the nonprofit sector, AND bringing our greater networks of volunteers, partners, clients, and donors into the fold.

Common Good Vermont invites nonprofit staff, board members, and community members to an event focused on advocating for the common good. We will:

  • Unpack the challenges and opportunities facing nonprofits and our communities
  • Empower nonprofit boards and community members to advocate effectively
  • Learn why and how nonprofits can and should engage in advocacy (yes, nonprofits can lobby!)

Our time together will include:

  • A presentation on the State of Working Vermont Report from Public Assets Institute
  • A state of the sector briefing and an introduction to nonprofit advocacy from Common Good Vermont
  • A panel discussion of lawmakers, board members and advocates on how to get your board and broader community engaged in advocacy

Why this event, now?

We all benefit from nonprofits daily, often without even realizing it! Whether you are visiting a hospital or place of worship, receiving mental health or substance use services, or enjoying land trust trails, you are experiencing nonprofits in action. Federal funding cuts and policy changes, and general uncertainty are creating new challenges for Vermont’s nonprofits and the communities we serve, posing significant threats to essential services and programs.

Whether you’re a nonprofit leader or concerned citizen, we all have an interest in ensuring that the nonprofit sector, vital to our quality of life and a driving economic force for our state, can continue to meet community needs. This interactive event is designed to equip you with a foundation in advocacy, sector knowledge, and strategies to stand up for Vermont’s nonprofit sector and advance our missions.

Join us! We would be grateful for your participation on February 16th. We also invite you to join us on March 25th at the State House in Montpelier for Nonprofit Legislative Day.
