Position Summary:
The Senior Accountant plays a crucial role in the financial management and reporting of Housing Trust of Rutland County, Inc. reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Accountant is responsible for various accounting functions, including financial analysis, reconciliations, and reporting. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong accounting skills, analytical abilities, and a commitment to the mission of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, to assess the organization’s financial performance.
- Conduct variance analysis and provide insights into budget vs. actual performance.
- Assist in the preparation of financial reports for internal stakeholders, board members, donors, and grantors.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget.
- General Ledger Management:
- Maintain the general ledger system, including recording journal entries, reconciling accounts, and ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
- Review and analyze accounting transactions to ensure compliance with accounting principles and organizational policies.
Grants and Contracts Accounting:
- Assist in the management of grants and contracts accounting, including budgeting, expenditure tracking, and reporting.
- Prepare financial reports for grant proposals and assist with grant compliance requirements.
Month-end and Year-end Close:
- Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparing adjusting journal entries, reconciling accounts, and assisting with financial statement preparation.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely and accurate completion of financial close activities.
Audit and Compliance:
- Assist in the preparation for financial audits, including gathering supporting documentation, responding to auditor requests, and implementing audit recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including tax filings, grant reporting, and internal policies.
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies in accounting procedures and systems.
- Participate in the implementation of new accounting software or systems upgrades.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation or progress towards CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit organization or similar environment.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel (Yardi and MIP a plus).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have a team focused attitude, problem solving skills, and be detail oriented.
