Executive Director
40 hrs/week
Position Summary
The Executive Director spearheads all organizational, fundraising, grant management, and public relations/outreach efforts for Sail Beyond Cancer VT, which is a local affiliate chapter of a national organization, Sail Beyond Cancer USA.
The Executive Director holds primary responsibility for securing resources that will sustain SBC VT’s mission, its day-to-day operational expenses as well as the attainment of long-term Sail Beyond Cancer VT objectives.
S/he does this by designing and executing strategies that increase the organization’s support from a range of sources including individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Key responsibilities for this position include daily operations management, development planning, cultivation of major donors and grantors, executing annual fund mailings and special initiatives, administering grant-searches and grants, tracking pledges and receivables. Lead Sail Beyond Cancer VT’s external communications and public relations strategies.
Advanced writing, presentation and phone skills are required. This individual answers to the Sail Beyond Cancer VT Board Chair and works closely with other members of the Board of Directors. S/he is part of Sail Beyond Cancer VT leadership team and will manage any subsequent hires, contractors and vendors.
This position is 40 hours/week at $32.50/hr. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Leadership:
● Work with the Board of Directors in developing and updating the SBC VT Strategic Plan.
● Act as a professional advisor to the Board with regards to all aspects of the organization’s activities.
● Work with the Board Chair and BOD to create and implement a solid succession plan.
● Along with the Board Chair, act as a public spokesperson for the organization.
● Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and jointly with the BOD when appropriate.
● Represent the organization at community activities.
● Work with SBC USA to uphold the larger mission and brand.
● Seek professional development opportunities (conferences, seminars, etc.) and present appropriate training to the BOD.
Operational Planning and Management:
● Continue to develop and refine an SBC VT Strategic Plan and a specific operational plan that centers upon the goals and objectives for our passengers, Board and Donors.
● Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the Sail Beyond Cancer VT.
● Prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies, review existing policies on an Annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate.
● Draft Volunteer orientation and training packets and on-boarding procedure.
● Support the Board by preparing the meeting agenda and supporting materials. ** Help with organization of Board Retreats**
Program Planning and Management:
● Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services.
● Monitor the programs and services of Sail Beyond Cancer VT
● Oversee the planning, implementation, execution and evaluation of special projects.
Human Resources Planning and Management
● Ensure that all staff and Board Members and Volunteers (especially crew and captains) receive an orientation to the organization and that appropriate training is provided.
● Work with lead Captain of sailing crew to train and increase our number of Captains each summer.
● Board Recruitment: Help create a solid hard copy and electronic copy of our Board Recruitment folder that we give to each potential Board Member. Create a system of tracking potential Board Members.
Financial Planning and Management
● Work with the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget.
● Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of Sail Beyond Cancer VT.
● Research funding sources, oversee the development of fundraising plans and write funding proposals to increase the funds of Sail Beyond Cancer VT.
● Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate.
● Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed.
● Work with SBC USA to learn/oversee the software platforms of Salesforce, Sign-Up Genius, Jotforms and Mailchimp as they apply to SBC VT.
● Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization. Work closely with the Chair of Finance Committee.
● Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization.
● Develop diverse funding strategy, corporate sponsors, annual fund program, major gifts stewardship, foundation and grant sources.
Community Relations/Advocacy
● Communicate with Donors to keep them informed of the work of Sail Beyond Cancer VT and to identify changes in our community served by what we do.
● Oversee our Donor communication policy, especially with regards to acknowledgements and Donor recognition.
● Oversee the system of the contact capture of both mail and email of every single passenger that sails with us.
● Oversee a systematic approach to following up with every person that has sailed with us.
● Oversee the collection of nominee testimonies.
● Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other non-profit organizations to help achieve our goals.
Risk Management
● Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization’s people (clients, staff, management volunteers) property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks.
General Responsibilities
● Work collaboratively and positively and pitch in when needed to keep all aspects of Sail Beyond Cancer VT moving forward.
● Support the safest possible, most effective, fun and forward-moving environment for all of our BOD, volunteers and guests.
● Promote a professional and positive image of Sail Beyond Cancer VT and Sail Beyond Cancer USA at all times, including during non-working hours if applicable.
● Ensure that the office is staffed and responsive during office hours (TBD)
Requirements
● Must have the ability to follow the schedule of activities and events determined by the BOD.
● Must have a positive, helpful, and culturally appropriate customer orientation.
● Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
● Must have reliable transportation, ability to travel within Vermont and Out-of-State, and a valid driver’s license.
● Must be comfortable out on the water.
● The location of this job is at Sail Beyond Cancer VT headquarters, with flexibility to work from home outside of set office hours.
