The Search

The Kelly Brush Foundation (the KBF or the Foundation), a dynamic and growing national nonprofit organization, located in Burlington, Vermont seeks an energetic and entrepreneurial institution-builder as the next executive director to lead the Foundation and shape its future. The next executive director will work to advance the KBF’s mission of inspiring and empowering people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) to lead active and engaged lives. It is the mission of the Foundation that everyone with an SCI can enjoy the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of an active lifestyle.

The KBF was founded by Kelly Brush and her family after Kelly suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury in 2006 at an NCAA alpine ski race. While the organization started as a single local event – the Kelly Brush Ride – today the Foundation is a nationally recognized, mission-oriented thought leader in the SCI community and the adaptive sports world. The KBF has built a passionate base of supporters, enabling its very rapid growth, more than tripling in size since 2014 and achieving the financial security to commit new energy to innovative programming.

The organization offers the inspiration to believe and the grants to enable anyone with an SCI to acquire the adaptive sports equipment they need to be active. To date, the KBF has awarded 953 adaptive sports equipment grants to people living in 48 states, and over 150 grants to support alpine skiing safety. Since its inception, the KBF has raised over $8 million to support its programming. The Foundation relies on fundraising to meet its yearly budget and organizational mission. Revenue for the KBF was $1.6 million in 2019, with 50% of revenue coming from the Kelly Brush Ride, 30% from the Inspire! events, and 20% from general fundraising. For each of the past three years, the KBF budget has expanded by at least 30% annually.  The Foundation’s 2020 budget has been adjusted from $2.0 million to $1.2 million due to the impact of COVID-19 on its major fundraising events, however, key donors have stepped in to narrow the gap.

The executive director will serve as an organizational leader, strategist, fundraiser, and marketer to advance the KBF’s standing as a national leader in promoting active lifestyles for the SCI community. This leader will report to a committed board of 10 directors and will oversee a dedicated staff of four in programming, development, marketing, and operations/administration.

Looking ahead, there is a significant opportunity for this next executive director to drive growth and shape new initiatives at the KBF to further its mission. Coupled with programmatic growth and impact, this leader will expand and diversify revenues streams beyond events, deepen networking and collaborations, and enhance the KBF’s brand awareness, organizational governance, and organizational effectiveness.
