Overview of Organization
Central Vermont Adult Education has been serving Washington, Orange, and Lamoille counties for 60 years.
Our mission is to provide free adult education and literacy services to adults and out-of-school youth age 16+ in Central Vermont, and to engage the entire CVAE community in the pursuit of our students’ efforts. We partner with our students to help them gain the assets that lead to success and help them Get Ahead in their education and career goals.
We serve 450+ students a year, from all 47 towns and cities of Central Vermont and are Central Vermont’s resource for free, individualized academic tutoring for individuals in:
Basic skills programs: reading, writing, math, computer and financial literacy
English Language Learning and preparation for U.S. citizenship
High school diploma and GED credential programs
Academic skill readiness and certifications for work, career training and/or college

Position Overview
CVAE Board of Directors Job Description
Board members are a vital part of the organization’s group of students, community members and staff in Washington, Orange and Lamoille Counties committed to developing, evaluating and providing accessible literacy instruction for adults and teens in the belief that a literate person has the essential key for self-understanding and for full and active membership in the world.
Board members have the ultimate responsibility, stewardship and accountability for the organization’s dual focus that requires – providing basic education instruction for adults and teens while involving the entire community in the encouragement of their efforts.
Board members advocate for the organization’s work wherever they can promote the progress of individual lives in the 47 communities served by CVAE and the state of Vermont as a whole.
The CVAE Board is legally and ethically responsible for all activities of the organization.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Work in accordance with, uphold the CVAE Bylaws and review, and update them as needed.
- Determine how the organization will carry out its mission through long and short-range planning and evaluation.
- Recruit, orient and develop board members with the support of the Executive Director.
- Establish policies and procedures consistent with the purpose of the organization ensuring its effective management.
- Acknowledge and act upon the fiduciary responsibility for the organization.
- Adopt annual operating budget
- Regularly provide fiscal oversight
- Employment and evaluation of the Executive Director to ensure quality day-to-day leadership and administration of the organization.
- Make an annual contribution to the organization and take an active part in fundraising efforts.
- Act as a spokesperson and advocate for CVAE.
- Serves on board committee as needed.
- Attend board and committee meetings in accordance with the by-laws and meeting schedule.
- Honor the confidentiality of information concerning all CVAE students, personnel, volunteers, donors and board-related business.
