Advocacy is a broad concept that encompasses strategies and communications that advance a nonprofit’s mission. Making Your Nonprofit’s Case, a new 3-part series from the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits, is designed to equip nonprofit leaders with a better understanding and concrete tools to be more effective advocates for your missions. Participants will define goals, audiences, and resources as they develop advocacy strategies and tactics; study proven narratives and practical storytelling tools; and identify and track data that supports the need for the organization’s programs.

To acknowledge and work towards closing the gap that exists in educational opportunities, we especially encourage staff, board, volunteers, and leaders from lower-resourced, rural, BIPOC-led, and new (less than 2 years) nonprofit organizations to attend. Session 1 – Making Your Nonprofit’s Case: Back to Basics

Speaker: Lisa Hazirjian, Founder & Principal, Win Together Consulting

Whether you’re applying for funding, pitching a new program initiative, lobbying for a policy solution, or asking for a raise, your success hinges on your ability to make your case. In this session, you’ll get back to the basics of how to get what you need and want for your nonprofit. Using real-world examples shared by participants, we’ll walk through the steps of clarifying your goals and desired outcomes, understanding your audiences, mapping your resources, and choosing the strategy and tactics that make sense for your organization. This session will equip you with the basic strategic framework to make your strongest case to any audience.

Session 2 – Making Your Nonprofit’s Case with Storytelling

Speaker: Tania Bhattacharyya, Thought Leadership Strategist, Lumos Marketing

Storytelling is the most powerful tool we have as changemakers. By sharing our authentic personal stories and those of the community we serve (with permission, of course), we can stand out as we stand up for our mission. We attract and inspire an audience that is ready to roll up their sleeves and help us make shifts happen at our nonprofit organization. In this session, we will explore the dynamics of storytelling and create each member of your team’s individual ‘elevator pitch’ also known as a verbal business card.

Session 3 – Making Your Nonprofit’s Case with Quantitative Data

September 13, 1:00-2:30 PM EST 

Speaker: Hawwa Muhammad, Founder & CEO, Pink Trumpet LLC

As a nonprofit professional, if you’re scrambling for a way to communicate your accomplishments to your supporters but instead finding yourself putting out fire after fire, read this. With fewer resources to go around, it’s no longer about demonstrating that programs are being accessed by those they aim to support. The pressure has now shifted towards showing that social impact objectives are being met…and because there is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to evaluating impact, it’s a more technical and difficult calculation to navigate. In this session, we’ll explore how to design accurate and informative evaluations that leave your supporters with a clear picture of your progress.

About the Speakers

Lisa Hazirjian, Founder & Principal, Win Together Consulting

Lisa Hazirjian, PhD, is the founder and principal of Win Together Consulting, where she helps nonprofits, campaigns, and social justice organizations develop strategy, build capacity, engage supporters, and leverage strengths to achieve their goals. She holds a bachelor’s degree in public policy studies, graduate certificate in women’s studies, and doctorate in modern U.S. history from Duke University, and is working toward a Nonprofit Leadership Certificate from the Harvard Kennedy School.

Tania Bhattacharyya, Thought Leadership Strategist, Lumos Marketing

After graduating from the University of California-Irvine with a degree in psychology, Tania was raised for twelve years in the nonprofit behavioral healthcare field as a fundraiser, marketer, and eventually executive director. During her fundraising career, she raised almost $8 million in philanthropic projects. Today, Tania is the founder of Lumos Marketing, where her superpower is lighting up women’s voices, opening the doorways of opportunity and influence. She consults with a hybrid approach, guiding thought leadership personal branding strategy with ghostwriting to banish imposter syndrome and reduce overwhelm.

Hawwa Muhammad, Founder & CEO, Pink Trumpet LLC

Born in Nigeria and raised in Newark (NJ), Hawwa leans on her 10+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector to lead her social sector consultancy firm, Pink Trumpet. Her firm focuses on helping nonprofits develop the strategic and operational prowess to launch social initiatives. She holds a master’s in public administration from Rutgers University School of Public Affairs and Administration, and a BA in political science from Rutgers University.
