$5,000 College Scholarship For Outstanding Youth In Philanthropy

(STATE) – Demont & Associates, in partnership with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Northern New England (AFP-NNE), has opened nominations for a $5,000 college scholarship to a youth aged 10-23; the AFP-NNE Demont Scholarship for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy.

Robert Demont, President of Demont & Associates says, “We are delighted to recognize the efforts of an outstanding youth philanthropist with this scholarship award. We know that there are many very deserving kids doing inspirational work raising funds for many worthwhile programs in our region.”

The recipient of this scholarship award will be chosen from a pool of nominations by a New England Region Philanthropy Committee comprised of development professionals working in the fields of education and youth services in Northern New England.

The recipient will be announced at the AFP-NNE’s annual conference during its National Philanthropy Day awards ceremony in Portland, ME on November 7th. Teachers, non-profit leaders, development professionals, and others working with young people are encouraged to submit nominations for this scholarship award at Demont’s website here. The deadline for nominations is July 31, 2019.

The purpose of the Youth Philanthropy Scholarship is to foster greater interest among youth in the fundraising profession, says Demont. “We know that there is no greater joy than to work in a field where you can make a lasting difference for good, and we are ready to learn and grow from their involvement and their example.”

The 2018 scholarship award went to Nicholas Poitras from Madawaska, ME. Nicholas first began fundraising through Madawaska Middle School’s “Jump Rope for Heart” program, sponsored by the American Heart Association. Having witnessed his family’s own health battles, his grandmother with heart problems and his father with cancer, Nicholas took it upon himself to raise money for those in need and to instill compassion and togetherness in his rural community. “Nicholas has always felt the importance of helping people in need. He demonstrates compassion and empathy to the fullest,” says Nicholas’ award nominator, Dan Cyr. To date, Nicholas has raised close to $10,000 for healthy hearts within his tight knit community of 3,500. He was also awarded “Volunteer of the Year in 2018 by the American Heart Association.

AFP-NNE began offering its first Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award in 2007.
