Common Good Vermont Launches 2022 Report on Nonprofit Wages & Benefits

Common Good Vermont is pleased to release the Vermont Edition of The 2022 Report on Nonprofit Wages & Benefits in Northern New England. Every two years, Common Good Vermont partners with the NH Center for Nonprofits and Maine Association of Nonprofits to collect the latest data on wages and benefits from our tri-state area. Each state produces a state-specific report on wages and benefits based on the data collected in this survey.

Compensation strategy is integral to sustaining nonprofits’ missions and teams and the report is the only Vermont-specific resource for organizations to turn to for objective salary information, as well as insights into key sector staffing and compensation trends.

“In Vermont, our nonprofit sector employs about 69,000 jobs which translates to 1 in 7 workers. We contribute about $5.7 billion per year to the economy through wages paid, retail and wholesale purchases and professional service contracts. Understanding how our sector is changing is an essential step in planning for what comes next for nonprofits, our people, and our communities.”

Morgan Webster, director of Common Good Vermont.

As nonprofit leaders are increasingly recognizing the opportunity—and responsibility—to align conversations around compensation with their organizational values, this year’s report includes new data on equitable hiring practices. Additionally, in these uncertain times, new data on short-term changes to our workforce and shifts in remote work will help organizations plan strategically for the future.

“Almost three years into the pandemic, many nonprofits are struggling to attract and retain workers. A major takeaway from the 2022 Nonprofit Wages and Benefits report is that we must invest in the people doing the work as much as the work itself. It’s encouraging to see an increasing number of Vermont nonprofits focused on equitable hiring practices and embracing benefits like remote work and flexible schedules. Our communities rely on Vermont’s nonprofit sector and the strength of our sector relies on the people who power their missions.”

Jesse Bridges, CEO of United Way of Northwest Vermont

The digital report is free to nonprofits who participated in the 2022 survey and available for $125 for all others. The next survey will be in the Spring of 2024.

The Vermont Edition was made possible by generous support from our Vermont funders and sponsors: United Way of Northwest Vermont, NFP, and QuickStart. Additional tri-state support was provided by UST and Northeast Delta Dental.
