USDA Announces State Director for USDA Rural Development in Vermont & New Hampshire

We are pleased to announce that nonprofit sector leader, advocate, and Common Good Vermont advisory committee member, Sarah Waring, has been appointed as the USDA State Director for Rural Development in VT/NH:

Sarah Waring Will Bring Expertise in Economic Equality to Federal Housing, Community and Business Programs in Twin States

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2021 – Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the appointment of Sarah Waring as State Director of Rural Development (RD) in Vermont and New Hampshire.

We are grateful to have Sarah Waring in the role of State Director for Vermont and New Hampshire,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “With diverse skills and experiences, she will be an important representative of USDA in her jurisdiction as we work to improve the lives of the American people and build a better America.”

RD State Directors serve as the chief executive officer of Rural Development in the states and territories and are tasked with carrying out the mission of Rural Development to the benefit of everyone in rural America. In conjunction with the guidance and support of the National Office, State Directors are responsible for promoting the mission and strategic goals of Rural Development and provide key leadership to develop and support a productive, diverse, and inclusive state workforce.

Vermont native Sarah Waring most recently worked as Vice President for Grants and Community Investments at the Vermont Community Foundation. Previously, she worked at the Vermont Council on Rural Development, Farm and Wilderness Foundation, and the Sonoran Institute. Waring also worked as the Executive Director at the Center for an Agricultural Economy. In 2020, she served on the Governor’s Task Force for Economic Mitigation and Recovery where she supported the development of a toolkit for Municipal Engagement for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Waring resides in central Vermont.
