Job Responsibilities:

The Volunteer and Communications Specialist is responsible for the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers to support a wide range of agency activities, including direct service, events, and administration; as well as managing the agency’s social media activities, e-newsletter and other agency communications. This role also assists the development team with fundraising, outreach, event planning, and other development activities with the goal of increasing revenue and raising awareness for the organization. The Volunteer and Communications Specialist reports to the Development Coordinator.

Essential Functions:

● Manage assessment of ongoing need and recruitment efforts for volunteers and inkind donations across the organization

● Proactively develop and maintain relationships with local colleges/universities, businesses, and other volunteer placement offices to recruit volunteers

● Support the coordination of volunteer trainings and recognition activities, including logistics management

● Solicit and track volunteer and in-kind donation statistics in the database

● Provide ongoing guidance and support to agency staff responsible for the direct supervision of program volunteers

● Manage the creation and mailing of agency’s annual report and direct appeal letters; develop and execute corresponding online campaigns

● Attend and coordinate outreach events to raise awareness of organization, support development goals, and recruit volunteers

● Assist in the planning, execution, and evaluation of fundraising events

● Maintain up-to-date agency website and social media presence including e-newsletter campaigns for both volunteers and donors

● Create and maintain graphic design elements for website and promotional materials

● Perform other duties as needed, assigned, and directed

Organizational Responsibilities:

● Share responsibility for anti-racist, multi-cultural organizational perspective and Steps to End Domestic Violence’s social change mission

● Participate in daytime hotline coverage rotation and shelter support as needed

● Participate in team meetings, all-staff meetings and trainings, and supervision meetings with supervisor

● Participate in and present at agency-wide meetings and events including thrice yearly Community Advocate Training

● Participate in performance evaluations and annual program planning

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for shared supervision of volunteers and Communication interns, as needed and appropriate

Working Conditions:

● Primarily working in an office environment

● Varied hours, some evenings and weekends required

● Moderate travel within the community required

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

● Volunteer recruitment and management experience required

● Expertise in training and facilitation

● Strong communications background is required, including experience with social media and website content management

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners

● Demonstrated knowledge of community resources

● Comfort with and skill in public speaking

● Organizational and time management skills

● Willingness to work flexible hours including some weekends and evenings

This position starts at $22 to $24 per hour with a 40 hour work week, and is eligible for a generous benefits package, which includes health, dental, vision and life insurance, 403b plan, 24 paid days off, 12 paid holidays, and sick time.
